The good, the bad, and the sweet sweet games

Fri May 27, 2005, 3:07 PM
OK, I have yet again neglected this site like a toothbrush in a southern state. Lots of things have happened.

In March, myself , , and our other roommate Brent moved out of our little house. So we've been dispersed throughout the city to either our own previous residencies or in Brent's case, just a place he's welcome. The semester finished and I passed all of my classes through some version of self-imposed miracle. The procrastination that occured left little room for 'D' work yet I managed 'B' work at the very least. I quit the job that I had been holding on to throughout the semester at a casino. They apparently liked me enough to get me cake and a gift certificate for game spot as a going away present, wooberries. My new job started the day after I quit the casino. I now work for the Nevada Conservation Corps. To me this is summer vacation. I get paid to camp out for four days a week and chop down trees with a freaking chainsaw. On top of that they give a nice little college grant as bonus incentive. I have plenty of time to read during the work week. This last week I started and finished Shadow of the Hegemon. Part of the Bean spin off of Orson Scott Card's Ender's Game series. I'll be reading the sequel to that next week. During this weekend I plan to sit and play games. Speaking of which, review time.

Devil May Cry 3-

Awesome. The prequel to the previous Devil May Cry games, it explains the beginning of Dante's career as a Demon hunter as well as his relationship with his brother. The fact that his brother is in it causes a loop-hole in the story of the first DMC where they noted that his mother and brother died in a car accident when he was young. This will bother DMC fans for about a millionth of a second before they start kicking demon baby ass. The gameplay is fun but difficult, a trademark of Capcom games. The control set up is completely different from the first DMC but gamers can quickly adapt to it. The game allows for multiple styles of fighting that the player can choose from at the beginning of each mission. There's Swordmaster, Gunslinger, Trickster, and Royal Guard to start off with. Each has its own strengths and special moves that are improved upon as the player levels up their preferred style. The game will start you off in normal mode and let you play through like that until you die three times in which it suggests that you play in the easy mode that your lack of skill unlocks. I found this out in the first half hour of play and had to question myself and my personal abilities at any games. You will have challenges ranging from: kill the hoardes of unholy hellspawn, to minor puzzles and hidden levels that must be completed in a unique little style of their own. The cinema scenes are visually attractive, the dialog and actions are often cheesy but entertaining, and you will find yourself laughing or at least chuckling at the type of arrogant bastard that Dante is. Upon completion of the game ( I did it in normal mode my first time through, BECAUSE I'M NOT THAT BAD DAMMIT!) you unlock new costumes art galleries and clips along with hard mode. After Hard mode, there is Very Hard mode, and Dante Must Die mode. I don't know what happens when you beat Dante Must Die mode but I have theorized that Capcom implanted something into the disc that recognizes your victory over their ultimate challenge. At which point the game itself jumps out of your PS2 and begins the most violent process of sodomy upon your persons that is imaginable. In short this game is fully worth getting and I highly recommend it to anyone no matter what type of game they like.

Starfox: Assault-

At last another Starfox game with Arwings! Wait! WHERE THE HELL ARE MY MULTIPLE ROUTES AND BLACK HOLES!?!?!?!? The latest addition of the Starfox series has finally brought back the Arwings and Landmaster, hell they even threw in ground combat with multiple weapons. But they went and sent you on a story mode of predesignated courses that don't allow the player to navigate between, say, the asteroid belt and sector y, like the good old super nintendo and N64 Starfox games did. They even took out a good chuck of the previous games maps. They did add new levels like the crappy dinosaur planet from the earlier Starfox dissapointment, but they took out far too many of the other levels and took the freedom of movement with it. The progression of the game has you go through flying stages and then ground missions. Both are fun to play, but in my opinion they could have done without having as much of the game focus around the ground missions. To me a Starfox game is all about the Arwings and the flying combat and manuevers. It seems to me that in this one though, the developers had way more fun with having the characters carry bazookas in the versus mode in the N64 version than I did. Which is why I guess that most of the unlockable things in this game are done through playing the crap out of versus mode. I blew through this game in a day and then did some versus matches with my roommates until we unlocked Peppy and that was about it for me. The story was ok, the game was fun but dissappointing when put up to the standard set by the original Starfox and Starfox 64 (which I must have spent a few hundred hours on). You can get this game if you want a GameCube Starfox that isn't a load of shit (*cough*Starfox: Adventures*cough). But if you want to have a taste of the true Starfox experience, bust out your N64, dust it off and give it some love.

Musashi: Samurai Legend-

In case you never played Brave Fencer Musashi on the original Playstation, here's a quick review of what the game was and what is was about. In the time before the release of Xenogears, Square needed a RPG to throw out that would keep people buying their stuff. So, they created Brave Fencer Musashi. A fun little game that only takes about 20 hours of total gameplay to completely beat. It didn't have much story, the graphics weren't very good, and it wasn't very hard but it kept me entertained. You would wander around in a hack-and-slash style environment and gather legendary weapons and learn new abilities.

Musashi: Samurai Legend is much the same game. There isn't much to the story. A hero is summoned from a distant land to save a kingdom in peril and must gain the power of the five swords to save the kingdom and its princess. You take abilities from enemies to get past certain obsticles. You have a little town to visit where you can buy armor, accessories, bread, drinks, and ice cream to keep your health up on the field. The areas consist of the places where you go to get the five swords (guaranteed you can guess at least four) and each boss is somehow weak to the previous areas sword. Not much to it but it can be entertaining with the little things you do in town or the abilities you can take from enemies. There's a lot of voice acting in this game. Which leads to the inevitable effect of bad voice acting. A lot of the characters in this game have the right sound and mood to suit they characters that they need to. Unfortunately, whoever they grabbed as the main voice actor for Musashi himself was horrible. It sounds like a woman trying to sound like a man. Considering that this is the voice you have to listen to through most of the game, I've ended up pounding the accept button during all of the dialog before anyone gets a chance to say what I'm reading on the screen. This is the type of game you get if you want something just for the sake of completing that's made by Square(Enix).

Polarium-

If you have a Nintendo DS and haven't really figured out what to do with it yet other than buy Mario, get this game. If you have a tendency to pick up Tetris and play the crap out of it at any given time, you are going to love this game. The game functions off of the touch screen. In the puzzles you are given a block, within this block are little blocks that are black and white, to make a line disappear you must make every block in a horizontal line the same color. To change the color of the blocks, you draw over it or tap it with the stylus pen. You are allowed to on the border line of the puzzle to help you change the colors of blocks on the other side of the puzzle and it is highly encouraged that you get this down in the tutorial. There are two main modes to Polarium. Challenge and Puzzle. In challenge mode you must simply make sure that the screen doesn't fill with section of falling sections of puzzle that can mostly be eliminated by drawing one line. In Puzzle mode you are given patterns of blocks in a puzzle that you must complete by drawing only one line. You may also create your own puzzles to share with friends and you may also go against friends in a challenge mode style. The main key to versus challenge mode is to simply draw and complete the first puzzle they set in front of you faster than your friend. This is an awesome puzzle game and I do recommend it. However, if puzzle games just aren't your thing, because you suck, then I recommend that you sit this out. Don't worry, there's a shitload of good games coming out for the DS in November, just in time for the holiday rush, convenient.

That wraps it up for reviews but I'd also like to note that I'm going to try to be playing FFXI during most of my weekends this summer. I've gotten my character's Dark Knight job class up to level 34 and I'm very happy with the environments, quests, and things to do in general with the game. There aren't many games coming out for the next 5 months that I'm really excited about, so I probably won't be doing many of these reviews until I find something good. On the other hand, I could just write about games that I've already played just for the sake of doing so and posting something... dammit there I've gone jibbering again. In type no less, and I'm too lazy to hit the backspace button. That's it for me for now so as a last statement I would like to add, SHIGGETYOOGADIGGETYBOOGA.
